Hooked Presentation Script, before group edit
Fishing Community Outline:
Fishing Intro:
- fishing...
- a sport to most,
- an occupation to others,
- and one of our favorite pastimes all around.
- the fishing community is created from a variety of individuals who bring many assets to the group, from all different levels of leisure and competition.
Levels of Involvement:
- From elders like Chris showing new members the tricks of the trade and traditional fishing techniques,
-to Novices like Russell expanding the field with new technologies and current perspectives, the multiple levels of involvement vary due to each individuals motivations and desired values of what they want... and want to provide for the community.
Motivations for Engagement:
Physical Boundaries that make this online community so meaningful:
- Hooked, provides a unique online "space" where members like russell can create their own environment and connect with others.
- Hooked is an open and inviting system where fishermen of all walks can engage and contribute in a "trusting group activity" that inclusively provides emotional security to go out and fish with confidence and pride.
Why did we choose this community as being benefited by online solutions:
- we chose the fishing community because we saw digital opportunities to bring an online system to such an extreme outdoor environment that could leverage digital tools to share the goodwill of a singular, as well as a group activity.
HUB: Finding a Fishing Spot
- Russell needs to find a fishing spot from credible users within the community that have the same interests as him, so he can make the right decision.
- Our online fishing spot locator gives users like Russel, a voice, to shop around for fishing areas based on his preferences and desire to fish on grounds that are more boating friendly.
- Assuming that russell already has an account, he logs in. He needs to find a fishing spot that comes highly recommended by his peers, but also fits with his own preferences and personal standards.
- this unique navigation and interface puts Russell in the fishing environment of looking down into this ocean of content.
- Upon grabbing and turning the navigation wheel, he finds the fishing spot window and immediately starts adjusting the levels.
- Russell has a boat, so a big stipulation for fishing is to make sure that he fishes in a location that has launching ramps and docking stations.
- With his busy school schedule, russell also needs to find somewhere close to home so he can have his fun and while close to school.
- Russell immediately starts seeing feedback scaled by most preference matched.
- Selecting Shawnee mission park, russell is presented with an array of user generated content of images and reviews from the hooked members. Each tag is specific to the user location of Shawnee Mission Park.
- Upon Choosing a user-post from "badbassmother," he has the option to "like" the post to legitimize it, "close" it, or comment.
- Since badbassmother posted something about boat launching areas, russell wants to ask his own question.
- After submitting his question about docking his boat, russell wants to remember shawnee mission park and add it to his "favorites."
- He drags shawnee mission and the information about boat docking into his tackle-box which allows him to customize his own space.
- He can open it up at any time and map the directions to his mobile so he knows how to get there at anytime and from anywhere.
iPhone Transition:
- once russell gets out to shawnee mission park, he has the need to find others within the area. Although a competitive fisherman, he still likes the company of others and the quick ability to ask for information at any given time during his fishing trip.
Trophy Room:
- Russell has caught his fish and has now uploaded it to the Hooked Hub. With his competitive nature, russell wants to compare and check out some of the professionals catches.
- When switching to the trophy room. Russell wants to search for catches by known/credible fishing groups. Perusing through the trophy wall he can sort through groups and fisherman from previewing their experience-point-level and deciding on which pro he wants to view.
- Russell finds the Codfather, with a high experience level, and decides to open up his trophy wall.
- He can browse through the Codfathers catches and view the fish's statistics and the fisherman's catching statement.
- With some of these "whale-of-a-tale" statements, Russell decides not to click the like button and add anymore experience points to the Codfather's profile.
- Jealous with the Codfathers catch, Russell closes his profile and storms out of his room to go back to shawnee mission park to give the codfather a run for his money.
Wrap Up:
We hope that through our customizable and accommodating informational network, hooked will connect fishermen in any isolated community who may live in rural areas or are otherwise unable to physically engage in helpful social activities.

Round 3
Here is our most recent hub online solution of users needing to find a fishing spot. After my initial experiment of using rotating wheels and a universal control to bring in content, this new hub puts the user in the environment of looking down at the fish or "content."
I also experimented with moving the control almost like a widget, that luke has also experimented with. After ideas from our find and share, along with everyone else presentations', I built upon concepts that they have had.
Seans levels idea on the map is something that I wanted to play with, from looking at his functions, and also looking at BurgerKings corp site, the levels dictating the user preferences was the most elegant way to search for fishing areas. My previous check-box system was pretty clunky and put me back into box-land, so I tried to reel it back using widget actions, movable content, and slider levels to reinforce my statement from my 3D model post and ideology of using this circular window as a "digital vending machine" where user control can retrieve content forward/towards you from this ambiguous pantry.
The Trophy Room and/or Tacklebox feature is to come...

Fishing Hub: redesign/revise02
From my initial concepts I presented on monday, the feed back was that the the layout wasn't serving the potential of a fishing community. However the experience of the controls and remote pop-ups did work well. So I redesigned the interface based on these comments, I used a giant port-hole as a relevant reference to looking down at fish and the environment. The navigation is based scrolling around the circumference of the frame, almost like searching/fishing.
The five circles indented on the side are your fave-five picks on whatever category you are in, you have the ability to grab content from the main screen and store them in you profile cache on the side, almost like widget functions. This makes the entire site a collection of your own preferences, amongst endless possibilities within the port-hole. I wanted the function of the control in relation to the window to be like a vending machine grabbing content from beyond.
Its still a work in progress...

Revised Hooked Logos
I played with the more organic contour of a fishes tail that tried to distance itself from its predecessor which mimicked the typographic forms, and ended up very stiff and uninviting.
There are two options, one with the fish tail on the "H" and the other on the "K."
There are two options, one with the fish tail on the "H" and the other on the "K."
Second Hub Direction
This exploration for the hub is based off of one universal remote that the user can place anywhere on the screen, it is detachable from its terminal with the Hooked logo. This allows user customization and also free infinite z-space for users to explore content through the red window.
You have everything you need on this remote and with expandable panels for options, you are communicating with the background to retrieve content for you that you can interact with.
I am still working out the content screen and how the remote will have a conversation with the information. The 3D models and looking through find and share website has sprouted some interesting ideas and experiments, this is the start of something new that breaks away from box-land.

3D Model: Reflection and Relevance
This 3D model is based upon the "trophy room" aspect of our website, trying to find specific catches posted by users.
The user is the outside cup and the entire wheel (which could potentially be a sphere) revolves around the user. Each cluster of cups represents a specific group of fishermen categorized by experience, location, etc. The idea is to peruse and turn the giant wheel of groups to find a specific group, then you would travel through a specific user (through the cup) to different levels/layers (discs) which represent all of his catches (discs on skewers represent each catch). By auditing all catches at once you can now click on an individual one which will bring you to that specific catch and a broad spec sheet of fish stats, user comments, etc.
Level 1: the user (external cup that rotates around)
Level 2: different clusters of fishing groups made up of individual members (each cup in a cluster is a single user).
Level 3: search through all of that users catches (discs on the dowel rod).
Level 4: the specific trophy/catch (center cup)
I asked myself what if searching for trophies or awards could be 3 dimensional/spherical and almost like peeling through layers of an onion to get to the center, which is what your goal was. Doing an audit of the circumference of the sphere first to thoughtfully make accommodating choices through careful organization. But instead of peeling away layers, the navigation would be more thoughtful towards the subject matter, (like Michael McCoy talked about in the start of his presentation), and reference the ease of navigation - would be like "shooting fish in a bucket;" because each set of catches is in its own individual bucket (or starbucks cup). So each layer and choice set is carefully catered to your search criteria.
I used cups and going through them after reading Windows & Mirrors, when they discussed looking through content and an interface instead of at it. Creating more natural and 3D experiences/ interaction that mirrors how we operate in our own reality.

Design Direction: Fishing Hub
My Fishing hub is very photographically driven and is split up into a fishing map grid to help isolate specific areas throughout the hub. The imagery and duotone nature highlights and color coats various areas of: the trophy room, profile, fishing spots, and tackle box.

SITE MAP
Our site map revolves around our 3-4 major areas of our online solutions facilitating offline needs. We have our "where to fish" feature where a google-instant/ajax system starts to give you immediate pin-pointing locations while you choose fishing site locations. Also, our trophy room lets you browse and categorize others catches and communicate through profiles while a voting system lets you rank users by how difficult their catches were. Our equipment finder is based off of user input that generates what type of equipment would suite your experience level the best. Users can also browse through our craigslist feature where you can borrow, haggle, trade, and but items off of experienced fisherman, where they can give you direct tips and facts about fishing. And lastly, your own profile, where you can keep track of your fishing spots, tackle box, license, and groups that you are apart of.

Community Naming and Type faces
Our naming for our entire system branched off of ideas and buzz words based on recruitment and grouping:
Lure - trying to attract members, draw them in.
Hooked - capturing an essence or membership within the fishing community.
Chum - giving incentive for others to come in and become a member.
Shoal - a group of fish who stick to gether for strictly social purposes.
School - a group who swim in the same direction.
Fishy Business - a pun on the seriousness of our communities subject matter.
These were our serious lists that related directly to our subject matter and essence of the fishing community in a relative naming convention.
Jessica has taken care of our color choices that relate directly to a bold "sportsman" look, and some are more tertiary and lean towards the leisure aspect and a calming feeling of fishing; but all have a different take on a natural and organic wildlife/outdoors palette and tone.
So far we are considering mostly san serif of slabbed serif to reenforce the sportman and athletic feel for fishing, and it could also compliment the soft palette of some of our color choices.
Our Start for typeface considerations:

Wireframe overview
This is just a general idea of how our wireframes work. This section shows the direct compatibility and connection from online user generated fishing spot locations and downloading that info to your mobil device to find your way there.
Most of our wireframes work in this similar fashion, however we are still fluching them out.
