Typography 3: Gutenberg Printing Press

Design truly is problem solving and fulfilling a need. Gutenberg is one of the greatest designers known today. He has fulfilled one of societies greatest needs of mass producing and making information easily available through his printing press. Its funny to think of the printing press back then was our modern day internet, it serves the purpose of entertainment, education, and documentation. He has single-handedly created a bridge through documenting history as well as giving civilization a stable foundation to branch out to record and share every bit of knowledge with the world. From lead type blocks to True Type Font files, the printing press has innovated and progressed our field and enriched our lives in every sense. Its incredible to realize the amount of designing, engineering, building, and time he has put in to produce something that we can access today with just the click of a button.

  1. agreed. i'm not sure, however, that society realized that they (we?) actually needed the mass-produced word though...until we had it.

  2. I agree, I suppose we don't realize or appreciate progress until we've truly experienced it in contrast.
